It sounds like there is not enough humidity around the plant. Try puttling some pebbles in the tray the plant sits in, put the plant atop the pebbles, and keep water in the tray -- just keep the water level below the top of the pebbles so that the pot is not sitting in water. Regarding the ideal temperature, that depends on the type of plant, but 72 - 75 is usually a good temp for tropicals.

Tropical plants LOVE humidity, and most people's homes are incredibly dry. You could try misting the leaves with a little spray bottle of water. I have noticed a lot of people's natural response to plants with the symptoms you describe are to water the heck out of it, which may not necessarily be good, because too much water can rot the roots and kill the plant. If you could, maybe move it to a part of your house that is more humid, like the bathroom or kitchen, and see if it responds well. More than likely the already damaged leaves won't change, but new ones may look better and not dry out anymore.

without knowing what the plant is, its hard to say.........some plants require a lot less water, sunlight, and humidity than others. some plants need higher temps than others. if its a true tropical, then bright'but not direct, light is best. water only if the top 2 inches soil is dry. move it to where the sun does not directly touch its leaves. maintain a temp of 68-75 F. dont overfertilize.
