I have a USB to 9-pin cable and when I plug it in, the computer recognizes it ("Found New Hardware"), but it won't open COM1.

not all peripherals can be configured to work in a com port . what are you connecting to your com port? do you have any USB ports? If not you can add a PCI USB adapter card. If you only have 2 usb ports you can add a USB hub to one of your existing USB ports for additional hardware you may want to add but connecting to a com port ,well about the only thing you may be able to connect would be a mouse and that's questionable.

You should be able to do this but it really depends on the PC and the USB to serial device you got.

I use a belkin USB to serial on some of the laptops I have and I have been able to set it to com1 by simply disabling any ports in the BIOS then under the ports section of Windows XP in the device manager double click on the port that is currently assigned to the USB device.

Next click on the port settings tab then click on adavanced. This will bring up the FIFO buffers and at the bottom of the page you will see a section where you can assign the COM port. If COM1 is not listed it is most likely used by another device such as a modem.

If this is the case you can simply change the modem settings using the same methods.

A lot of those usb-serial adapters are meant for things like older palm pilots and don't actually create a new COM port. If they do, chances are it won't be COM1, it might be 3 or 4, chances are you already have at least com1 and maybe com2. Check device manager for the com ports that you have available and change what ever hardware/software you're using to a different com port.

I have a similar situation with a Yamaha cable that connects to my laptop. (Win 7) Go to Device Manager, scroll down to Ports: (select USB Serial Port) right click and select Properties, then select Port Setting and then Advanced. Here you can set the Com Port for USB Serial Port to COM1.

Click "add port" and select local port and name it USB. Then select you printer. The easy way would be to run the Printer software you can download from the website and allow it to configure your printer. Be sure and install the software before plugging the USB printer into the computer.

By far, most USB-devices can not use COM-ports. They are technically too different. Only devices specificly designed to work on both type of ports, will be able to.
