A letter guys get when there girl writes to say that it is over. They became popular and got their name during the first world war. So many wifes would write thier husbands scared that they would die so to not feel that hurt they would end it. ()

A "dear john" letter would be the kind of letter a wife or girlfriend would leave when moving out and breakign up with someone. E.g., the guy comes home from work and his wife moved out and disappeared... and leaves a letter that goes:
"Dear John,
You work too much and you never tell me I'm beautiful. I'm leaving to go do some soul searching. Don't come looking for me.
Sincerely,
Jane."

The "Dear John" letter started late in WW2 when soldiers volunteered to join the armed services. Often times committing to a relationship before entering service. Then while on the battle front they would receive a letter and it would usualy start with, "Dear-(their name"suggesting a break up from their promised commited partner.

A dear John letter is one in which a person breaks up with a former loved one while he is off in a far off land fighting for his country as a member of the military. A real cold and cowardly way to break up.

Back in the wardays, wives didnt want to wait for their husbands to return from war. they sent them break up letters, Dear john, i no longer want to be with you. now a days we just translate it over to a break up letter. So this Dear john letter stems back from world war 2, and its significance or term has survived the test of time, but basically in a lump sum or brief overview, its a break up letter.

Dear John,
I'm leaving you. Actually I've already left. Harry and I are halfway to Fresno, as you're reading this, probably after you've returned from work and sitting in the driveway for half an hour talking to your Mother every evening like you always do. I've left you the dog. I always hated that stupid dog. Well, I gotta run. Hope you have a nice life. Now you can take up golf like you always wanted to. Hey! Good luck with that.
Sincerely,
Mary
