I use a laptop on wireless network right now. I'm not usally docked onto my docking station and even if i was its still wireless there as well. I want to have access to my external drive i'm considering buying from my router. So pretty much i want to have access to my external drive from my home network. That way i don't need to connect it to my laptop every time i want to use it. I haven't bought anything yet can anyone guild me on what to buy?

Seagate and Western Digital are reliable. Do you want a SATA connector? You also might want to consider getting an internal hard drive and buying a seperate enclosure if you want more than 500GB and are trying to customize it.
