I know its a long shot but I wanna know if there are any free games available to download that are like Civilization, Age of Empires etc.

Civilization, Age of Empires are not free! the demos are though.
How about Warcraft 3
Medieval 2: Total War
Command & Conquer: The First Decade
Rise of Nations: Thrones and Patriots

Not many RTS games going for free at the moment am afraid the problem is that once a company releases the rights for it to be published on the internet it sacrifices some of the rights to that game. Namely the games publisher loses money.
Cheap alternatives include Starcraft series (Blizzard entertainment), or some of the world of warcraft series.
Alternativly just wait till Halo wars comes out on the Xbox 360 to be blown away!!!

Well it is good to buy the original of these games as you will be supposting the developers into making better rts games. Mostly you can download any game demos for free.

i dont know any free game downloads but you can get some command and conquer (i hope you hav heard of that). red alert 2(ra2) and tibeium sun [i think] (ts). for 4.99 on sold-out.co.uk
