To Muppet:

Yes, the US pop scene is abysmal. I haven't really listened to radio since high school. My problem is that it's totally maunfactured and disingenious. There is absolutely no artistic merit. And on top of that, most of the s/hit isn't even any good.

It's not my cup of tea that's for sure!

You've got three sorts over here:
1) Manufactured Pop Idol/X Factor winners and losers.
2) Pop-rock bands - branded as rock, but manufactured as pop.
3) Reformed bad pop acts - e.g. Take That.

I don't know if it's my age that makes me cynical - I remember once being much more enthusiastic about popular music, but I never thought I was a naive teenager that would buy anything.

There is also the Emo scene, which I would term popular - there was once a time when you'd only have a couple of goths at school, now everyone wants to be one. Half the kids don't even like the music, they just wear the clothes - I think that say's more about the music scene today than anything.

I was always led to believe the US pop scene was bad because it's all R'N'B that all sounds the same or pop rock bands that all sound the same (e.g Nickleback) - is that still the case?

It's so bad you get the feeling that if all the pop artists were to disappear then the world really would be a better place.

But the old British pop stuff was good, it's only the new stuff that isn't worth listening to. Mostly I agree with Shunthut43.

Yes its been crap for a long while now!! The only pop i like is 80's pop. I used to be a big fan of pop music but because it so bad i turned to good music like Indie and Rock.

How can POPular music be crappy? Someone is buying it to make it into the charts.
I personally like the cheesy music depending on the mood of the day but I love British Indie music

Its even worse, because our acts are only imitating yours. Which is like someone doing a really bad impression of someone who is bad already.

Its all for kids here, ringtones, merchandise all at rip off prices to rip kids off.

Uk music is the least of our problems though!

depends on what YOU class as crappy, I'm a pop music fan myself but all the pop released in the last couple of years hasn't interested me much so i stick to late 90's pop

Yes. Rock/pop stars are being manufactored these days. Music is in bad trouble. Rock is dead as we knew it. Just remember the lyrics in "america pie". "The day the music died"

Europop is actually better for the most part. I like Samantha Mumba.
