Is a check engine light an automatic failure of a NC safety inspection? Only reason it came on is that I took too long to get an oil change. Thanks!

Yup.

Remove the NEGATIVE battery terminal for a minute or two to clear the code light.

hundreds of things could cause a check engine light to come on. most of the time it is a small emissions leak somewhere. take it to a service department for your make of vehicle to have the code pulled and find out what it is.

Yes. Get the oil change and they will reset the light for you, or read the manual as to how to reset the service reminder and do it yourself.
