You ladies who said "Yes" are sooo wrong....if you're pregnant you can NOT have a period. Your cervix is closed off with a mucus plug and the lining of the uterus stays put. You CAN bleed around the time of your period during pregnancy, but it is NOT a period. A period is caused by the absence of a fertilized egg, which in pregnancy, there is one (or more!)...saying you're having a period during pregnancy just isn't possible.
Bleeding during pregnancy CAN be normal. As I said, some women bleed during the time of their menses for a month or two (sometimes completely throughout pregnancy)...the color, texture and amount is what you need to watch out for. If it is light in color and there is very little and it doesn't contain clots, there is unlikely to be a problem...if it is very dark, heavy and contains clots, this is usually the sign of a problem, in which case you would need to get to the doctor.

The first change that signals a pregnancy is the cessation of menstruation. During a monthly ovulatory cycle, hormones fluctuate on a cycle. But when you're pregnant, estrogen and progesterone are produced continuously, which prevents the shedding of the uterine lining. Approximately one percent of women have some abnormal bleeding early in pregnancy and a woman can mistake this for a period. In approximately half of these cases, the bleeding will eventually abate and the pregnancy will proceed normally.
However, bleeding in the first trimester may also be a sign of an abnormal pregnancy, such as an ectopic pregnancy or an incipient miscarriage. Later on in the pregnancy, bleeding may indicate a problem with the placenta or premature labor. If you experience any bleeding, you should notify your obstetrician.
When you know what to expect, and understand what is normal and what may be abnormal, you will no doubt be more relaxed. If you ever have a question, never hesitate to consult with your physician. Even if it is only reassurance that you are given, it is important to know that you and your baby are healthy. Yes, I have a neighbor who just has a baby about 3 months ago She didn't even know she was pregnant until her water broke. What a Suprise that would be. She is heavy set and just thought she was gaining some weight. She had her period normal the whole nine months.

It could be implantation bleeding. This is a bit gross but the colour is normally a bit different - light pink or darker brown, normal period should be brighter red....
Good luck.
