You can try the various irritants mentioned in previously. They'll work, but they're less than half of the problem. If the rest of your face and body don't really read the sadness, you can be bawling your eyes out and not get the part.

One thing that helps is to work up the tears offstage. You can do that either with your own sense memory (that is, think of something that makes you sad) or with the character's experience. Once you've worked up the emotional state, bottle it up before you go on. It'll work even better if you can find the character's tears rather than your own, but either one will achieve more realistic sobbing than an eye irritant.

Another thing that helps is to do exercises before you go out on the audition, in front of a mirror. Take off all your makeup and look directly at yourself in the mirror. Think about all the things that make you sad, all the things you hate about yourself, looking directly into your eyes. Put yourself down. It's not a lot of fun if you're doing it right, but it will help you develop a connection to your own emotions, and that will help you bring out the sadness when you need it.

I'm afraid this technique takes a long time to develop, but the results are very spectacular: an audience really connects to you because the pain is so real.

If you can use a tissue put some onion juice on it, and when you are called to cry just wipe your eyes with it, after you do this a few times, crying will become much easier for you until you will be able to produce tears on demand.

Just really step into your character. If you were in the situation the character was you would cry. If thats too much try relating the character to yourself and your own experiences

Open your eyes really big and when your nose gets a weird tingly feeling, start thinking of the saddest thing that could EVER happen to you....it worked for me

Very discreetly pluck a nose hair. You'll be in tears for sure!

keep a little bit of cayenne pepper on your finger and rub your eye before your need to cry.

handling some jalapeno peppers works too.
