Averages can be computed by calculating the sum, and then divide by the number of contributors.

You also need to read the question very carefully; because $5.43 is a total of two days, and $3.54 is per day.

So, add $5.43 once, $3.54 twice, and $7.89 once. This is $20.40 in total during five days.

You want to know the average amount per day, not the total of five days. On average she spent $20.40 / 5 equals $4.08 per day.

There are three different types of average, but when the word average is used without a specific type, it means the mean. The way to find the mean is to add up all the values, then divide by the number of values. So for instance, if you had three tests, and you got 4, 5, and 9 out of 10, the average grade would be (4 + 5 + 9)/3 = 18/3 = 6.

So, since you're given three dollar amounts, you can just add them up and divide by three, right? Nope. The teacher is trying to trick you by giving you the total for Monday and Thursday in one amount, and by only telling you what she spent on Tuesday and Wednesday once. Since you're trying to figure out the average daily cost, you have to take the total cost and divide it by the number of days, which is 5.

So first, you add up the dollar amounts to get how much she spent all week: $5.43 + $3.54*2 (because she spent $3.54 on Tuesday AND Wednesday) + $7.89. That's $5.43 + $7.08 + $7.89 = $20.40.

Then, you divide the total by 5 to get the average amount she spent each day. $20.40 / 5 = $4.08.

She spent an average of $4.08 per day.

To figure out the averages you need only 3 steps

STEP #1: Add up all the numerical values in your example ($5.43 + $ 3.54 + $ 3.54 + $7.89 = $20.40). $20.40 is called "the total"

STEP #2 : Count the number of items that you used ( in your example $5.43 represents 2 lunches all the others represent one lunch. So the number of lunches is 2 + 1 + 1 + 1 = 5). 5 is called "size of the sample".

STEP #3: Divide the total by the size of the sample ($20.40 / 5 = $4.08) and the result ($4.08) is "the average value".

The answer to your question is $4.08

Try this procedure on any other list of numbers.... and ..... good counting! :-)

you figure out the amount that was spent and then divide the answer by 5(the number of days in work week). that gives you an average.

total cost = 5.43 *2 + 3.45 * 2 + 7.89
= 10.86 |+ 6.90 + 7.89
= 25.65

so aveege = 5.13 the value is not specified
