The claws growing, maybe they need to be cut down so the cat won't do it so much, but a scratching post would be the best thing then the sofa won't get so messed up, it's happened to us before and it sucks!

Hi there...cats claw for several reasons which are instinctual: they like to claw in certain places to help them shed the outer sheaths of their nails and it's also a means to mark their territory since they have scent glands located in the paws pads of their feet as well. To discourage cats from clawing inappropriately consider using double-sided sticky tape. Cats dislike getting their paws stuck to the tape and eventually learn to avoid areas which are unpleasant. However, it's important to place several clawing posts nearby the locations they claw and rub a little catnip on the posts to entice them to claw the posts. Cats need an outlet to claw so if you discourage them from one location you need to have alternatives in place to let them do what nature intended.

Frustration and boredom. You have to provide a scratch pad for it or use a spray to put on the furniture to deter the cat from scratching.

Does he/she have a cat stand? If not you should buy one. Cats need to able to scratch on something and by providing something they can scratch on would be good. Otherwise they will keep using your furniture.

My cats do it, they do it to file their claws...And in time your $3000 couch will look like a $20 garage sale find if you don't nip the problem in the butt.

1. You can get them de-clawed
2. There are these mittens you can get at a pet store and they go over the kitties nails like a condom.

Good Luck!

Its trying to sharpen its claws, i think its a natural reaction, because our cat is declawwed and still goes up to everything trying to sharpen them.
