The person has is going to do the payroll and the personnel person should be very business like and keep your information confidential. All job application should ask for a person's social security number. If this is your first job, go to the social security office in your city and apply for a social security card. Sorry to say but this is common practice. It is so old fashioned but they check your background. Of course this lets your ##'s out there for anyone to walk off with.
You sound if you understand a person is what there social security number is. You can find out anything about someone with this number! Even take over there identity. I feel it is so old fashioned to ask for a SSI #.
Things have to change!

They do that to run a back ground search on you. To make sure that what you are telling them is true. Happens at all Job's when you fill out an application. Also, its for tax purposes as well.

I believe there required too. in order to verify eho you are, your legal to work in US, check background, & tax purposes for employment if hired.

You can refuse to give your SSN to anyone you don't want to give it to....including potential employers.
Of course, they can also refuse to consider you for employment based on your refusal.
