Sorry to say but this is common practice. It is so old fashioned but they check your background. Of course this lets your ##'s out there for anyone to walk off with.
You sound if you understand a person is what there social security number is. You can find out anything about someone with this number! Even take over there identity. I feel it is so old fashioned to ask for a SSI #.

They do that to run a back ground search on you. To make sure that what you are telling them is true. Happens at all Job's when you fill out an application. Also, its for tax purposes as well.
