my son has asked for a handheld from Dell for christmas. I have no idea what he is talking about. I looked them up on Dell. But, they are not saying exactly what they are. Are the hand held computers or what?

Correct. It is smaller version of your PC. It is also called Pocket PC, in short PPC. Microsoft have designed few compact version of their Windows Operating System which can be used on these devices. Like PC, you have RAM and Hard Drive on these devices( which is known as internal memory or built in of the device). The built in memory of these devices are very less, however, we can use some Expansion Cards where you can store the data.

Like PC, you can do a lot of Stuff on these devices. You can have DATA connection from the Carrier and browse internet on these devices. There are many companies who design compact version of Messngers, like Yahoo, MSN and AOL. You can have that install on this device and with data connection you can chat with people when you are travelling or from anywhere. Also, you can install many softwares which are designed for these compact OS versions. Last but not the least, you can have many games installed on this PPC and also you can use this as a phone.

So, it is a little computer with an added feature of Phone on it. You can check the following link for more information:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pocket_PC

I hope this information helps you...

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays.

Basically yes, it's a handheld computer. It's more so a calender and organizer, but with a blue-tooth connection, it can access the internet and be used the same way as a PC.
