i agree with you to a point. If you don't want to pay 600, don't buy it. Also don't expect a price drop for almost two years on these things, that is approximately how long it will take Sony to get into the black and actually start making money on the PS3.

Petition? Sony is still losing hundreds on every system they are selling. It is the Blu Ray that shoots the costs up, that and the unique Cell chip. A Blu Ray player alone is 800-1,000 dollars. A really great one for $600 is a steal. Sony is make or break their whole company on the success of this. If you don't like the price I recommend waiting another year (no real games till then anyway, like Metal Gear, Gran Turismo, next Naughty Dog game, etc. ) and by then I expect Sony to have a price drop once they can lower the production costs of Blu Ray.

Sony is still taking a loss on these units until the price on their components decrease. From what I have heard, PS3 makes you buy the total package (i.e. BluRay DVD reader, etc.) while XBox just offers you many add-ons. So, it might be similar to buying an Escalade (all options are really standardized) at a higher price compared to a Chevy Tahoe (where you can pick from your options more and more) for a slightly lower price.

I guess that there is an investigation going on regarding the distribution of the PS3 and the false shortage.

I believe that's called supply and demand. make something scarce and the price goes up. Sony is actually charging a very fair price. They spend a good amount on each console and they make just 5% more on selling it. You cannot petition a company for not having enough of the product available. If you don't have the Patience to wait in lines for it or the money to by one in an on line auction I suggest you either try for the Nintendo Wii or buy a Xbox 360. Mostly the 360 though because Microsoft sells their consoles at less then cost to the distributor and the distributor passes the savings to you by selling it to you at cost.
