The only thing different in the rules is the Designated Hitter.

The DH was tried to add offense to the game, it was something they were just going to try for a little while and they decided to stay with it because offense brings in the crowds.
The National League decided to stay pure and did not want to cheapen the game.

You know, I could not back this up, but im fairly sure the NL and AL split over whether or not beer should be sold in the ballparks, no lie, then along the way when a new idea came, they were both given the right to choose independantly, for example the DH. Dang while that is an interesting story, according to Wikipedia, the American League started as a large minor league circuit that expanded and grew in popularity eventually merging with the Current major league, the National League, in 1903

Both leagues play by the same rules.
The only difference is the DH.

The DH started out as a 1 year experiment in 1973,
and has stuck.

Because the AL has sissy umpires who have to use those big chest protectors (if it's still like it is since the days I followed it).
