You need the 20GB hard drive in order for your 360 to be backward compatible due to differences in the architecture. For backward compatibility, it has to recreate the procedures and functions of Xbox using stored data on the hard drive.
If you want to play original Xbox games on an Xbox 360 Core System, you need to pick up a hard drive accessory and you're ready for backward compatibility. You can get the latest software updates from Xbox Live, burn a CD from xbox.com or sign up on Xbox.com for a CD that can be delivered to your home at a nominal shipping and handling fee.
Log onto Xbox.com/games for an up-to-date list of original Xbox games that run on Xbox 360.

Sadly you can not unless you buy the 20GB hard drive add on for the Core system. The backwards compatibility of the X360 is software emulation so you need to have a hard drive. IT will cost you about $100 new which is why the Premium 360 is a better deal since you get the headset, wireless controller, month of Live, etc. Try going to your local Gamestop, EBgames and see if they have any used ones you can get for about $60 or so.
