I'm a diehard consevative. I've got a friend that is a over the top liberal blowhard that just doesn't stop explaining how Dems are the best thing for the world and how great are nation will be now that they have power. How can I explain to him that his views are not only incorrect but insulting and that I really don't want to listen to it anymore? Poiltely?

Just tell him that while you both have different views you will respect his as long as he doesnt tell them to you. There is nothing more awful than having to listen to someone spout righteous and holy about why their party is right especially when you are friends.
If he is really your friend he will leave it alone, otherwise just avoid him till he gets the hint. There are just certain things I dont talk about with some friends and that is fine, we agree to disagree.

I come from a family with a conservative dad and a liberal mom. We always had really interesting political discussions, but when it was too much, everyone knew to turn it off.

I would say to your friend - "I respect your opinions although I do not agree with them. Please respect my opinions, and do not try to convince me that I am wrong and you are right. Can we please agree to disagree, and talk about something else now?"

Good luck with that! ;-)

You can't try and tell him that his views are wrong at the same time you are telling him to not discuss politics. It's going to have to be one or the other or you find a new friend.

Laugh at everything he says as if he is telling a joke. I find it hard not to laugh anyway since their ideas are so funny.

You must tell him the following:

"Though I have no disrespect for your beliefs, I am a Conservative, and do not wish to hear you talk about them."
