Clinton signed the law limiting welfare to 5 years of lifetime benefit.

Most of those who get benefits now are in transition and/or cannot work for medical or psychiatric reasons; or child care would cost more than they could earn.

In any event, after 5 years they work or starve. Or find some other way to survive.

Some benefits are entitlements (earned income credit); or are arguably subsidies to farmers (food stamps). And many soldiers' families get food stamps because army wages are so low.

I think there is a limit to how long one can collect welfare yet there will as one of the other's said those that don't want to or are to lazy to work.

Actually the Federal Government should get out of the Welfare business whether it be Personal or Business. Let the chips fall where they may. The People and there are really some that Require help the Disabled or Mentally challenged that need everyones help. The rest that is what Charity Organizations are for. And BusinessesThe only 1 I can remember and I know there maybe others that can do good getting help would be like Chrysler back those years when Lee Iacola Was in Charge He saw to it that the company paid the government back but early and the company thrived with Stock Splits and Adding Shifts and better cars...

Why is this constantly being asked? As written above welfare was reformed in the 90's and has a time limit, also out of all you hard earned tax dollars welfare is an iota of government spending warfare on the other hand eats up HUGE chunks of the tax dollar. Having a Miltatry whose budget is 6 times of the entire worlds miltary outlay seems like largese to me, also why aren't you moaning about Corporate welfare? The Oil companies were given billions in research and development money while recording record profits, you wanna worry welfare let's get Exxon of it first ok?

real good question..I use to work full time (now on disability) at a lot more than minimum wage, paid daycare, etc. My insurance on me and my son was going to cost me 3 weeks pay..Pre-taxes..Without food stamps my son and I would have starved, without medical assistance or section 8 housing..he never would have seen a doctor and we would have had to live in the car. My medication alone is $1200 a month..That is an entire months salary at what I was making. The govt was real helpful..the more I made, the more rent I paid, the less food stamps I got..I could really get ahead..It's even worse now that I am disability..I am so sick of you people that judge us as LAZY...most people on welfare would work if they were better off but the fact is that by the time they pay day care, car gas, etc..they make more staying at home..Unless you are one of the blessed few who luck into factory or govt jobs FULL TIME with good and affordable insurance..you are screwed.. don't judge until you are in my shoes..I hope to God you never have to be on food stamps..It's real fun to be treated like a 3rd class citizen from the govt just because I need the services of something I paid for 4 years.

Some states now require that you work to receive welfare benefits. I was on welfare at one time, and while it helps self esteem, the government actually lost money by me working. The state would pay for daycare, which ended up costing more than I made in wages. Welfare isn't all that great I was receiving $546 for 3 kids and my rent was $414..Great life?
Another thing that bothered me, was everyone talking about Tax dollars,,I was working paying taxes also..HMmmmm

It sounds like a nice idea, but there are many in my community who abuse the current welfare programs. these are the same people I go to answer a call for police intervention for some reason, and they live in a single wide trailer with the floor rotting out trash on the porch and just a general nasty house, but they have a $5,000 leather oversized sofa and a 60" bigscreen and a $40,000 car out front, dont have a job and managed to put out the dope they were smoking just prior to my arrival, as the smell hangs in the air. problem with offering them a job is they are LAZY. Yes I have a job, but if it ended tomorrow there are mant things I can do to support my family, and I will not be unemployeed long I can promise you that.

They do, but you do not realize that people on welfare in essence know that they can get a free ride through life as long as they stay under the family income amount for their household? A part time job will cause them to lose their benefits. They do offer them to them, they are the first ones called when companies are mass hiring labor but they do not take the jobs.

Sad to say but true.

I look at the state of this city I live in and it is full of trash and crime and people that don't care. My neighborhood used to be mostly people that cared enough not to throw trash in parking lots and streets and would actually work in their yards and keep their homes up. Now the neighborhood is mostly full of people that throw their trash out everywhere and sit on their front porces doing nothing or stand around old cars drinking alcohol covered with paper bags. When the world gets so full of those that don't care then it will bring down the rest of us. A few just can't keep supporting those that don't care. We try but it is tooooo much.
They don't want part time jobs.

Maybe if we didn't have 11 million illegals working in this country at below average wages, because they don't have to pay taxes or health care, we could get those people work. Why are American workers paying union dues when the union supports illegal workers that take the jobs, Americans can't afford to take.
Arcaemous-Single mothers do work and have always worked. That's no excuse.
