Yes, where else are you going to plug it inwhen you want to play electrically? But it can be played with out too. It's just an acoustic with the hook up for the amp cord to be an electric guitar. Look up electric acoustic guitar amp.

If I understand you correctly, you're talking about an acoustic guitar that has a pickup added or is wired for play through an amplifier -- if that's the case, then you don't need an amplifier for it. On the flipside, if you're talking about a hollow-body or semi-hollow-body electric guitar like a Rickenbacker or a Gibson ES-335, you will need an amplifier. You should also know that they make special amplifiers for acoustic guitars that have been wired for electric or have had pickups added, and you definitely want one of those (not a standard guitar amplifier) for an acoustic-electric guitar. You don't need one, but what's the point of having an electric acoustic if you don't use the "electric" part of it?

no, you don't. it still plays, the amp outlet is there so you can make yourself louder when you play live
