i think maybe a little small New Years party for the kids with the hats and other New Years toys would be good. Maybe just with you, your husband and the children. It usually will make the little ones feel more grown up. Then maybe after you put them to bed you and hubby can continue in a more adult fashion.

My wife & I had the same problem. You have to create an environment that's like a birthday party for the kids. Invite other couples that have the same issue...if you have a room that you can set-up just for the kids (a den?) with movies/video games and snacks for them...but close enough for you to keep an eye on...just make sure all sodas are decaffinated. Have a BBQ...we do it 12 months a year unless it's pouring down raining or heavy snow.If you're thinking of having food delivered, remember there will be football games on that night and it will take a long time to get even a pizza delivered. We would hit an early movie which would get us home before the "rookie drinkers" are on the road making things crazy, then come home for a cook-out...then we would have the den set-up for them, but they usually didn't or couldn't stay up too long at that point. The more things you keep them busy with during the day, the more tired they will be that night, still leaving time for the adults.

Ah! The family New Years. I did this once.
I bought some noise makers, plenty of Martinelli's (now you can get several flavors), hor'dourves (i.e. cheeze slices, fruit, etc). Additionally, you could let the kids dress up or paint their faces. If you're up to it, you could have some of their friends over . . . their parents would love that!

throw a party!! start of with fondue maybe a cheese and chocolate dip, it was a favorite, my mom would have "adult delicacies- aka fruit, fancy breads, nuts" to dip for her and dad and we kids had our favorite everyday fun things to dip such as bread, marshmallows, grapes and apples. beverage was sparkling grape juice for us and wine for adults. there was alittle dancing fun, mom and dad could get in a dance- the rest of the time they watched our "show" then there was settling in with a movie until the countdown. we went to bed and i know they popped in a movie.
