Up here in Canada they have a program called workfare and they are made to get a job of some kind or they don't get a check at all.

Work. No one should be on welfare if they can raise their head off the bed and move their arms and legs. What we need are people who are willing to enforce the laws and put welfare recipients to work.
We're told day in and day out that the USA won't have enough people to fill the jobs that illegal aliens are doing. Well, let's put welfare recipients to work and find out. If we can have day laborers picked up at Home Depots across the country, then we can have people picked up at Welfare Centers or at their homes. Put them to work in the fields, mowing lawns, shovelling snow, and even working on computers and retail. Welfare should be a hand up, not a hand out. Train American Citizens. Give them the education they deserve. If the Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights and even our government worked as hard at providing jobs, day care (which could be accomplished by people who would otherwise be on welfare), transportation and shelter to U.S. Citizens, welfare would be next to non-existent and would be more of a public service. Illegal aliens should have no rights except prosecution. Law abiding immigrants have the same rights as American Citizens (except to vote) so there is no need for the ICIRR or LCOM, MALDEF, or other illegal immigrant promoters.
Here's a suggestion: How about if we have our churches, as a missionary type venture, work with the Welfare Departments and Department of Labor. Let's get unemployed church members (or even employ them with grants from the Government) to drive buses to welfare recipients' homes and take them to and from work. Pick up their children and take them to daycare (which can also be provided through grants) and then take them all home at the end of the day.
The Swift plants will need workers since the illegal alien raids so start there. Train the welfare people to do the work and then they won't need welfare. What happened to the old saying "If you don't work, you don't eat"? If we have so many jobs going begging, there shouldn't be any need for welfare. Let's get cracking. No benefits whatsoever should be available to illegal aliens.
Oh, and by the way, every single one of us has a responsibility to do something to alleviate these problems. So get off your duffs and start a movement to end welfare by helping people to work!
We are already doing it so don't come back and tell us to practice what we preach.

Welfare and all the programs that go with it should be done away with. If these people don't want to get a job and support themselves then they deserve to live in a box under some freeway and if they have kids and they are not adult enough to want to support them then take the kids away and put them into a home with people who are adult enough to want to care for them. If women continue to have children they can't afford take the kids away and make her get her tubes tied. Just like we did with the over population of cats and dogs before you can adopt one they need to be fix. Do the same with these irresponsible women get them fixed so they can't produce any more welfare kids. Let's stop the cycle and the only way to do that is to control the problem.

you are not so up on the times, most of the recipients can now have their check direct deposited, so that is not such a deterrent and by the way: Jobs are not so easy to get and not promised for keeps, also remember you better hope that you don't have to be one of those people waiting for a check one day, anything in this day and age can happen. MERRY CHRISTMAS

In America the ACLU would immediatly sue the state and federal governments for making people have to stand to receive free money. They would then also make the government give welfare recipients free cars. LOL In all seriousness welfare is a good program but it needs to be temporary and then that's it. You either found a job or were given disability or something.

Actually it is not....do you know anyone on welfare? They get checks to pay their rent, their utilities are 100% paid for, they can get a newly built home and still be considered Section 8 and only pay a small percentage of the mortgage, they get a check per child, some get $1000's a month in food stamp benefits, and every child gets full medical and dental benefits, free childcare, schools supplies, clothing, etc...Some even get full financial rides through college.
Let's not even talk about WIC vouchers for free specified groceries that we pay an arm and a leg for (formula, eggs, milk, cheese, cereal) until their child is five years old.
Working Americans will never get those types of perks. EVER.
The government pays them to be sorry. Why should they work?

most people who receive welfare aren't really capable of holding jobs and prospering. go hang out down at the department of public welfare in the lobby and make some friends, you'll see what i mean. and btw... welfare isn't that much money. most places, for a single person with no children, it's less than four hundred dollars a month. come on. nobody's living high off of it.

OK, I can see where you're coming from. But it's not like you actually just walk into the welfare department and get money. You have to go through more BS than anyone has ever gone through at the motor vehicle office. I've waited at that place for almost 5 hours one day, just trying to get my children medical coverage.

Not as many people need welfare as are on it. It has become an abused priviledge and I suspect that it shall be cracked down on as the economy declines anyhow No more welfare and working for money under the table at the same time, welfare abusers.
