Audie Murphy who played himself in several movies and acted in other features is the most decorated soldier in us history...
Another two that stick out in my mind are Charles During (on Rescue Me) and Eddie Albert (Green Acres) Read the wartime heroics of these two men...truly heroic....
ALSO
Steve Buschemi used to be a NYC firefighter And after Sept 11th he went back to work in the rescue attempts.

And if you go back to lots of the the older guys, Many of them served in WWII & Korea .
Lee Marvin
Ed McMahon
Jimmy Stewart

I think Christopher Reeve was pretty brave. There are many times after his accident that he could have just given up, ended it all, but despite being paralyzed, he fought to live as long as he could and be around for his wife and children. And then went on to be a spokesperson for the disabled and for stem cell research.

I think it was Charlise Theron. When she made Monster she took on a very frightening role and she was not afraid to make herself completely different from who she is. She changed her looks and became the character. She is so beautiful but had no doubt that she could portray Wornous. She put her career on the line and it paid off.

Probably Audie Murphy. His Medal of Honor proves it.

Perhaps one who accepts a role because they believe in what the character stands for and not for the purpose of gaining a huge paycheck or acclaim.
