As you may know at one time, they could, actually for 140 + years, but FDR was the only one who ever ran for more than two terms. 2 terms was a traditon, set by Washington. The idea was not to allow the Prez to gain too much power or have to much party influence over the supreme court, etc by packing it with like thinkers. Roosevelt actually tried to do just that with the court through his longevity and trying to increase the coourt to 15 members. Congress stopped him. He was elected to 4 terms, but served very little time into the 4th before dying.

Under Truman the Consititution was amended to limit the Prez to 2 terms. Truman was exempt, but he chose not to run again.

A Prez can serve two terms plus 2 years. So if a Prez dies or is removed from office and the VP takes over he can finish that term and run for 2 more if there is less then 2 yrs remaining on the term he inherited, if there are more than 2 years remaining, he can only run for one full term of his own. So about 10 years is the longest time a Prez could serve now. I think that is best no matter who he is or what party.

Who would be now? Hard to say. I think Clinton would have been elected to a third term, but probably not a 4th. He was a pretty good Prez even if a person doesn't like his character, he payed of the national debt, built a strong economy and left a strong economy. His approval rating was 60+% upon leaving office, so re-election would have been very likely. If he had been elected to that third term, then Bush may never have run, especially if Clinton defeated him in 2000. Once defeated, candidates tend not to run again anymore and if they do they usually do not get their party nomination. The last to do that was Adlai Stevenson and he lost the 2nd time too.

Anyway, predicting who might be now has too many variables. Had Clinton left office in 2004 with a high approval rating, probably Gore. (Remember he got more popular votes than Bush in 2000 anyway) He did not win the Electoral College vote, though.

Had Clinton Left in 2004 with very low ratings, more likely a Republican and if I had to say whom, I think probably John McCain, but that is ribald speculation only.

if I had had to bet, Gore, I would say.

Hope that helps.

The current president would depend on when it started and the path of things since. But we couldn't do better than Ronald Reagan or George W. Bush. If Clinton had been in for any longer, or country would not be our own anymore. We would no longer have the rights and privileges that we enjoy in this country and it would NOT be the United States of America. He had little known plans for us that would have padded his pockets very nicely.

I do not believe it is possible to declare a confident reply, After Roosevelt Eisenhaur may have taken 3 terms, JFK would not have been elected at all so from that point its impossible t predict because any number of people may have become President and we could have General Jimmy Stewart USAF and famous actor who was extremely intelligent and Love of Country and Honorable Duty clearly at great fit for POTUS, any number of Famous people could be POTUS

They went to two terms because the Presidency KILLED FDR. It's a high stress job. For that reason, I doubt that any president would last more than about 12 years. Clinton MIGHT still be here, but if he were, he would have ignored the WTC attack, just like he ignored WTC I , the Cole, and every other terror attack against us. We would certainly have had additional attacks here at home by now.

i think that it is good that they have rules on that. i actually think that elections should take place every two years instead of four. i think that if there were no term restrictions that the united states would be in a worse state than it is in now. i think that even though we may believe that our president is doing a good job you always need fresh ideas. plus if the pres was there for too long he might get lax. i strongly think that our current pres would be long gone. he sux

No, this is a good question. I've thought about this for quite a while and you know what I'm going to say. Our problems would not have occurred at the Towers because there was not a vendetta with the nations, Saddam Hussein (sp?) really had it in for the Bush people because of the bombing and killing of Hussein's daughter. If we had kept Bill Clinton in there for say, 20 years, those that harbored the vendetta would be gone. The oil would not be such a big issue and our foreign relations would be more in tact. I don't think you can work for YOURSELF when your in the White House. It's obvious so obvious that's what has occurred.

The U.S. Consititution states you ought to be a "organic born citizen" to be president. contemporary State branch coverage reads: "even with widespread familiar concept, U.S. militia installations out of the country and U.S. diplomatic or consular centers are no longer component to the US interior the which skill of the 14th substitute. a newborn born on the premises of this type of facility isn't situation to the jurisdiction of the US and does no longer get carry of U.S. citizenship by using reason of delivery." As such, it McCain is a citizen by using regulation (becasue his mum and dad are U.S.) yet no longer by using delivery, and is for that reason no longer allowed by using the form to run for President. although, as in lots of alternative situations, the Constitiution is in simple terms no longer observed, because it incredibly is against the interest of the powerfull, who see the Consistution as purely incredibly paper for use purely whilst handy.

Frankiln D. Roosevelt. Since he did serve longer than any resident. let see he would be 100 yrs old. The Second would be Ronald Reagan.

Vleek-Typical Democrat crying about the elections. Republicans don't cry when they lose or ask for a recount costing tax payers millions. Yet when a Democrat cost us millions we don't say anything.

Well, we would have never been stuck with clinton then, 'cause Ronald Reagan would have gone another two terms, and would only have stepped down in 94 when he was diagnosed. Then his VP, either George Bush Sr, or whoever ran as VP in his 3rd or 4th term.
