As a father of two, I would say it is a form of socializing. I'm going to speak about online games in general, as I have played many of them. I met the lady who has become my wife (and mother of our twins) while playing Everquest 2. She lived in Pittsburgh, PA and I lived in San Diego, CA. I have made several other friendships, the oldest of which has lasted for I think around 8 years so far, and still counting. A friendship which has spanned several games (Dragonrealms, Everquest1, Star Wars Galaxies, Everquest2, World of Warcraft). It also lets me spend time with local friends who I work with. MMORPGs are a hobby, no different than bowling, playing darts, going to clubs, etc. It is something several people I work with enjoy, and after work we will go home and hang out together in game. Not always, now that I have twins, but a good amount of time. So yes, it can be socializing, but probably not socializing at its finest.

Ever see the South Park about warcraft? I think it's season 10 episode 8 or something. They make the argument that it is. Realistically, it's not, because the point of socializing is to give you practice interacting with people in the real world. Computers allow you to edit your communications, and take out body language. Body language is an important part of socializing, and if you spend too much time online, you never learn the nuances.

yes, to a degree.

i wouldn't consider it as good as going out and socializing in person. but you do talk with other people in game, you develop friendships... if you're in a guild, you get to know a lot about the other peope in your guild. if you use vent or teamspeak, you get to actually hold vocal conversations with them as well.

and sometimes you go on to meet the people you've met in game in real life and you end up verygood friends with them.

besides, its more social than a FPS game.

but as the tooltip says on the loadin screen... take everything in life, even wow, in moderation... go outside and get fresh air, and hang out with people outside the confines of a computer screen.
