Everyone strives to believe they are a good person. (Unless they are sociopathic.)

They look for evidence that confirms they are good people so they can see themselves as good.

When they make mistakes, they have to justify it to themselves so they can retain their sense of goodness.

They just don't apply the same leniency to everyone else.

It is human nature.
