Okay, here I am to dispell the myth that adding sugar to ANYTHING will not make it stay alive longer.
When you cut down a tree, you are taking one of the main sources of nutrients away from it. Sugar WILL perk a plant/tree/bush up, but it WON'T keep it alive. Plants get their food from a process called "photosynthesis" and it's true that "photosynthesis" does convert stored sugars to food, but it requires an actual root system for that to happen. It's complicated and involves a few other steps so if you are really interested in knowing what's up with it, try calling a local florist. The stuff that they give you with cut flowers is a preservative. It is actually not a good thing to give to flowers that still have a root system because it blocks the little veins that carry water and other nutrients to the leaves and flowers that are trying to reproduce. And it's not the same thing. Don't do the asprin either. It will cause the needles to fall prematurely. Keep it watered on a daily basis and don't stick your tree near vents that blow out dry air. Good luck and Merry Christmas!

Although it helps feed the tree, it won't work unless you prepped the tree properly. When you bring it home, you need to cut off the bottom of the trunk. Just a couple of inches will do it.

When plants are cut, they are self-healing. This means that it will scar over and seal itself to prevent more damage. Since plants are dumb, they don't realize that you're trying to feed them, so this self-healing will kill them prematurely. When you cut off the scar so the cut is fresh, the tree will accept water, sugar, aspirin, or anything else you stick in the stand.

The myth busters did a show on this last week. They tried everything I have ever heard of and at the end of 4 weeks i think it was the one with just plain water looked the best. I think the one that lost the least needles was the one that they gave Viagra.
