My husband's ex bring him to court demanding maintenance payments. Therefore we had to have a solicitor and fill an E form. Therefore our solicitor's bill is around £20,000 and the ex's less than £5,000 pounds (She also wants us to pay her bill). We don't understand why the bill ends up such figure, which is all our savings. We made an enquiry about the bill and were told by the solicitor if we don't pay the all amounts (already paid £7500 update) they would not do anything for us. The final court hearing is next month, we really don't want go to the court because the solicitor fee. What will happen if we don't go and just waiting for the court results? Can the solicitors do that to us?

my husband pay the children until they finish university( until 2009, they're all in unversity now), but the ex pay nothing for them and do nothing to herself. All she think is that he owes her. She brought the case demanding my husband pay her (half his salary) until he dies. He already paid her for 5 years according to the Consent Order.

Why did you let it go to court and why didn't you represent yourself? You have to pay maintenance for you kids, but it should be a reasonable amout. If he's remarried I recon this must have been going on for sometime. Without the full facts it is hard to advise you, the CSA could have sorted this out and may have made you better off. My ex threatened me with the CSA, I said go ahead it will save me about £40 a week. We sorted out without courts as this is better for the children. We are now friends again and she loves my new wife and child, buys him pressies at Christmas, if we went to court this wouldn't be the case I'm sure.

Contact the law society

They have guidelines so if you have a record of what your solicitor has done, and how many hours they've spent, the law society will let you know if its reasonable.

Your husband should have been paying maintenance especially if children are involved. He should have settled out of court with his ex wife.

This is a tough one since I dont know where you from, but I suggest you look up your local law society on the web or go visit your local council or court house and seek help there.
Good luck!
