Apparently The workers work 80 hr weeks for 5p an hour!! (The Guardian)

"Nazmul, 24, whose job is to stick pins into shirts, said he regularly worked more than 80 hours a week, with only one day off a fortnight. With overtime he makes 2,400 taka (£17) a month. "If a big order comes in we have to work. [In Britain] you get three-for-two offers. It is we people who have to make the third shirt for you. There's no choice. We just get shouted at. There are others who will take my place if I do not work."

Yeagh i dont shop there either. The quality isnt that great. But i wouldnt shop there now anyway. I dont want to feed the exploitation! its disgusting. The conditions these people work in are terrible too and if they complain they are thretened that they can get business from China if they dont like it!

I hardly ever buy clothes. I cant afford it much myself as a graduate and moving to London which is pretty expensive. But i will still not shop at Primark.

to be honest i HAVE thought about the fact that at least these people get a wage. Maybe now that its public knowledge the company will improve working conditions and pay them more? we can all hope.

This is indeed a despicable act, yet they are certainly not the only ones and whilst we in the West continue with our high demand for goods at cheap prices this cycle will continue. Slight positiv is at least they employ people I know its a pittance, but they can easily take the work elsewhere then the people have even less (please dont think i am trying to justify it though)

If you are looking for a cause to fight, check the link and see how Nestle were directly responsible for the deaths of thousands of babies, this campaign is supported by the National Union of Students, and they have posters up all over campus' yet nestle have never challenged them so it must be true

hi i know that slave labour is really bad, but dont you think that because primark is so massive over here if people stop shopping then the people that work for a living in these countries will have no job at all and that is worse? plus although £17 pounds isnt a lot here it may be a lot there, in tunisia the staff in major hotels only earn the equivalent to about 70-100 quid a month but they have houses and get by really well funding education for the children and extras. it is all relative and yes in england 5p is nothing but some people appreciate something rather than nothing.

no, i didn't know that! my friend practically lives in Primark although ive only ever been in there once and got socks. The quality is rubbish and won't be going back!
Then again, loads of clothing nowadays is made aborad in China and Vietnam so how many other companies are paying stupidly low wages for slave labour that we don't know about???!!!

I guessed slave labour was used, as the the prices are too cheap and not much profit would be made to benefit the poor folk:::i dont shop there, was crap anyway and its just not worth it.

It is true that that little bit of money they are grateful for and it puts food on their table, but big businesses still shouldn't get away with totally screwing ppl becuz they can. we shouldn't take advantage of others becuz we can, we should treat them as we would like to be treated and we don't have a primart or whatever in MI but I would go to Goodwill or thrift store b4 I would go somewhere like that. Get the word out

I have heard the arguement against what we call slave labour is that fact that it does actually give people a job and, although in the West we think the money is bad to them it's not as bad as not working in their own country.

Primark is full of tat, but I wouldnt shop there after reading that. Slave labour is wrong, if we shop there it will continue.

I've never shopped there before anyways but I certainly will avoid it now...

That's truly awful, there's no excuse for it nowadays.

I certainly will. Price is right for me and the wages the manufacturer pay are between the employer and the labour force. Not the consumer and the distributer.
