+ As far as I can tell there has never been any amount of personal involvement in government by the "people" of Iraq. They have had Kings, Dictators, and been conquered and ruled as part of an empire by others.

I think the big question is, will Iraq ever be a democratic country. Can they handle it? Lets hope so.

Since its invention by the British in the 1920s Iraq has never had a true democracy. The first head of state was King Feisal installed by the British government so they did not have elected leaders from the start.

No, Saddam was a dictator who killed his own people, besides killing Kurds, Assyrians, and Armenians. He bombed Assyrian churches and built himself as many palaces as possible. When voting elections began, people were forced to vote for him or else death--not just for the voter but the entire family of the voter. Definitely not a democratic country.

Nope. And truthfully I'm not too sure how the new government will fare. A democracy is hard to impose from the outside. And there's always challenges to one from the inside.

I hope it all works out though...
