The United Nations needs to do what it was meant to do, stop the spread of war, famine and the proliferation of nuclear weapons. It's failing at all of these things. You cannot sit down and talk about things endlessly, at some point, you have to take action. The action part is what the UN seems to fail at constantly. Country after country continues to obtain nuclear weapons and Africa continues to slide downhill with war and famine becoming more and more widespread every day.
People constantly quote the United States as being the problem, and granted, we aren't perfect, but lets get some things straight. We are the good guys. If you don't believe that then you can just stop reading because you're lost. Second, we pretty much pay for the United Nations to exist. Third, we are a force for good in the world. The U.S. has it's problems but there are far worse problems in the world. If people spend half the energy that they spend criticizing this country on actually fixing the real issues abroad, then the world would be a much better place and then, and only then, could we focus on what the United States could do better.
We'll never leave the United Nations and we probably shouldn't, however, we do need a strong President who is willing to appoint people like John Bolton to the UN to help reform this corrupt organization. Hopefully, with Kofi Annan's depature it will mark the beginning of some positive change in this organization.

Yes, a lot of Americans are unhappy with the U.N., and a few of them have recently been involved in scandals, but I believe they are still working sticking with. If the U.S. left the U.N., the whole thing would most likely crumble, and a majority of countries would loose some or all of their foreign relations.
The U.N. does lots of good. Right now, many U.N. troops are providing security in Afghanistan, since a lot of our soldiers have been transferred to Iraq. They help get food to countries who need it, and give smaller countries a voice in this big world.
Look at it this way: The U.N. is like Congress. Nobody likes Congress, but we keep them around anyway, because they're needed. They DO do good things, just like the U.N. In fact, the U.N. is probably better than Congress, because they don't have control of a single countries' finances.
A little work is needed, but the U.N. is more good than it is bad. They'll have a new Secretary-General as of January 1st, and new leadership can often lead to new ventures. Let's give them time.

The UN is nothing more than allowing outher countires to feel important and have a role in the world as much as the United States. The purpose is good only if they put their mouth where their money is. Honestly the US doesn't need the UN, but we do play along with them. Plus it does give us an idea of how or what others are thinking. We can't get out. We'll lose to many friends. remember this makes them feel important on a USA level. If we got out then they would feel we don't feel they are important anymore.

U.S. out of U.N. and U.N. out of U.S.
Why? Oh let's see, their's Kofi the Korrupt who was preceded in corruption by ButrosGali. It is an anti-American institution - has been since the beginning. It assigns countries like Libya to its human rights commission. It coddles dictators like Chavez and Kim Jong ILL. Its 'soldiers' rape girls in Sudan. Its 'peacekeepers' on the Lebanese-Israeli border cuddle up with Hezbollah terrorists. The list is nearly endless.
The real question is, why are we still allowing valuable Manhattan real estate to be taken up with such a piece of garbage?

We should stay in and start listening, for once. When we help to set up a regulation that helps keep people free, we should not turn our backs on it, and yet insist that everybody else shouldn't. This country is too nationalist and bigoted.

Stay around .
See and watch who is making a monkey out of themselves in the UN.
Have fun with their communication system in ghostly kitchen's dialect from the graveyards in planet of apes.
How they bark and purring at one another in planet of apes.
Sometime with real -time in throwing pots and pans among themselves in planet of apes.
At loss and blurr on what they were suppose to do out there in planet of apes.
Internal conflicts should let them handle.
See how good they are?
All this while kicking the butts of big brother..
See the trainee can do better?
Will see who get kick on the butts later running back to big brother in planet of apes.

LOL!
We should get out of it and bomb all other countries because obviously the UN has never done anything good!
(except cure smallpox, provide peacekeeping forces, and mediate disputes among countries)
