I agree with twz. I also had an epidural with my first pregnancy ( pregnant right now with my 2nd) and it was better than going through the pain of labor. They also had to tell me when to push but I was still able to push. The only thing with the epidural is it might slow down your contractions so they would probably give you pictocin(?) which speeds it back up again. Some people say the epidural hurts worse than the iv they give you but with mine the epidural hurt less. Plus labor hurts worse than the epidural. Good luck

It depends on the kind of epidural you get, and the anesthesiologist. My first epidural was so strong that I couldn't even lift my leg. I couldn't feel anything at all, not even pressure, and I pushed for three hours (he was a big baby, too). The anesthesiologist refused to turn down the epidural. He said it wouldn't help anyway. He and the nurse actually had an argument about it. With my second epidural, I only felt pressure, which helped me to push. My third epidural wore off immediately before pushing, so I felt everything (actually, it didn't hurt as bad as I thought it would). Personally, I think labor hurts a lot more than the actual pushing the baby out phase, so I'm all for the epidural.

I have two children. My first I had at home and my second I had in the hospital. Obviously there is no way I could have had an epidural with the my son, but i did have one with my daughter. I found it to be the worst experience I had and I would not do it again. You do not lose the urge to push but it is significantly diminished. Imagine someone numbing your hand to the point that it felt like your hand was completely paralyzed and then try to open a tight jar of jelly. Well sure your hand would work but you wouldn't know how much pressure you were using or if you needed to use more pressure. If you want to do it i say do it but i also say try other options first. There are pain medications that can be administered during birth that are not as intense as an epidural.

I have had 3 epidurals and I would never do anything different. They usually think that with the first delivery just becasue well its your first and you dont exactley know what muscles your needing to use yet, but dont worry most docs will put their fingers there and apply pressure you can feel to hep push the baby out. With an epidural you get to relax sleep read have fun while you wait, now they do place a cathiter but you dont feel it. You will feel pressure with an epidural and an urge to push that is what they wait for it mean the babys head is in place and has come down most of the way, it has only ever taken me 15 min to push the baby out from that point. You'll be fine, get the epidural and dont listen to your doc, mine even told me this time that I could get the epidural as soon as I got induced =) yay so no discomfort at all, I'll never have to feel a single contraction.

I had an epidural when giving birth to my son. Not by choice, it was either that or c-section. My body was under so much stress and I couldn't relax, so I wasn't dilating, and my water had been broken for 22 hours! After I received the epidural I fell asleep for 3 hours woke up fully dilated, never felt any pain but I could feel a lot of pressure. I told the nurse I felt like it was time to start pushing, had no problem doing so and my son was born 30 minutes later, no problems what so ever. Hope everything works out for you! And just remember this your body giving birth not theirs, don't let the doctors sway your decisions do whatever you want.

epidurals are WONDERFUL! I have two sons and i used an eppy for both and they did not effect my ability to push at all. With my second child though i didnt get my eppy until i was 8 centimeters deliated and experienced labor pains up until that point and it was horrible. I know women give birth naturally but i had rather enjoy the experience than to lay there screaming the whole time. There is a chance however that the babys heartbeat can drop and if so then the doctor can give you a shot to bring it back up. I think it is your decison because it is your body. If it is a man doctor then he has no clue what a woman feels when she is in labor.

I had it and it took all the pain away....enough to where i fell asleep and it stopped my contractions. They had to give me something to start the contractions back up and i did just fine, i was still able to push like anyone else. You will get warn out, but that's with anyone in labor.....i would assume people with epidurals can do it more easily than those without due to the fact that you're not feeling as much pain, but i do know it doesn't take you being capable of a proper delivery away from you.

I had an epidural and my doctor told me that I was one of the best 'pushers' she's seen in a while (Thank you, thank you) I was in labor for 30 hours and got my epidural 2 hours before I actually started pushing. It does numb you, but you can still feel the sensation of the contraction so you know when to push.

I had the epidural and i was able to push, i just had to push when they told me to, because i couldn't feel anything. No big deal -- my baby still came out!!
Don't ruin the experience for yourself by being in terrible pain -- try to go for as long as you can, and then take the meds. It's worth it in the end, doesn't hurt anything, and i guarantee the baby will still find its way out!! :)
