The above answers are good; in addition please inspect your washing machine, if it is not stainless steel, the slightest crack inside will rust and stain the clothes. Try to touch up with appliance touch up paint--the best solution--, or wash the rusty spot before each load, add Wink to a load to clean rusty spots, or consider a new washer/dryer. Good luck!

If it is not due to a cracked or exposed part in the washing machine as mentioned in another answer, you may have hard water. Do you have a water softener? You may need one to filter out minerals and other impurities in your water supply. If you already have a water softener and are maintaining the salt levels and filters properly, you may just have exceptionally hard water. I grew up in a home where this was the case. Despite a properly maintained water softener, my mother was constantly battling with rust in the clothes when we first moved to this house (whites turned a yucky yellow color) She uses a product (and has used it for 17 years now) called Iron Out. You can use it to get the rust out of your clothes. It also works to clean build up in you machine. Here is a link to their website: http://www.ironout.com/
It appears they have several different products for the home with hard water! I hope this helps!

Water carrys deposits. The deposits are filtered out by the clothes in your laundry. Look at it like it's a big swirrling filter.
You could add a water filter to your water line that would catch most of the impuritys before they made it as far as the washing machine. You can find water filtration systems at most hardware and plumbing stores.
