I have looked at and read 99.9% of all of them ranging from Roswell to the current notions of 9/11.
I have noticed a few common trends:
1) They all distort or bend the "quotes" of eyewitnesses
2) They all use grainy pictures
3) Use obscure documents and paperwork
4) Change and distort the half-truths into complete truths
Example: 9/11:
The Hunt the boeing farse:
Is it really all that hard to see the plane parts and compare them to the drawings of boeing and conclude that it was a boeing 747-200 that hit the Pentagon. Seriously, I am not an expert in avaition though I did serve in the USN working on military jets.
I think it is a serious injustice to the USA as a whole that the lies continue to spill forth. None of the sites bring anything new forth just the same lies: Compiled into a false truth. Is it tragic in the least.
My ability to reason and understand physics is why I refute the 9/11 inside job claim. how about you?

Is it not just as easy to create a farse to make the conspiracy theory work?

I think most conspiracies are born out of inconsistencies in events, if events happen exactly as official accounts tell us then there would be no room for speculation, this and governments complete unwillingness to show evidence or prove what they say is true also contributes to alternate ideas being formulated.
Here's a couple of things i find interesting, 4 suicide bombers walked through the busiest train station in England where there is literally 100's of CCTV cameras, yet only one picture of them is issued to the media, there should be 100's of pictures / hours of total footage of them in every millimeter of their journey on 7/7. Why not prove what they are telling us to believe?
There were CCTV cameras on the root of Princess Dianna's car crash journey, yet we're told they were not working on that night.
It's anomalies like these, of which there are 100's which fuel people to mis-trust what they are being told.
I'm not a conspiracy theorist, i think there are some very interesting questioning of official stories going on, I don't believe anything, conspiracies are unprovable, official versions of events are unprovable.
Who knows what is true? it all depends on what reality tunnel you choose to live in, everyone lives in their own reality tunnel.

Conspiracy theories abound because it's obvious at times that a lot of the most powerfull people are dealing from the bottom of the deck and screwing the rest of us. Look at how they lied and used 9/11 as an excuse to invade Iraq. Not so obscure documents have shown that they wanted to do that long before 9/11. Here is one of my theories. The original objective of the invasion was to intimidate the Arab world and build permanent bases. That's why they have screwed up this war so bad. They really aren't dumb. If they actually succeeded in making a stable government and got enough peace and security to rebuild the country, then they would have to bring the troops home. What would happen to all those permanant bases then?

Think about 9/11. A lot of people find them wicked, so when something happens like that and we have little evidence, people start to blame the government. Some people give motives like "For oil" or "To look powerful" or "To gain respect." Well, although that does appear to happen, the government could have easily made peaceful and more healthy ways to do so.
1) Alternative energy sources and drilling for oil in different areas
2) By doing the right thing, the government gains respect
3) To look powerful, the government could do something big to HELP it's own or another country.
Conspiracy theories are also believed by people who want attention or to stand out or just plain stupid people.

Do you get paid well for working on the internet posting stuff like this?
Can I get a job doing it to?
but to answer your questions, I think what makes it believable, is politics.
fanatics of either side will look for a reason to make a conspiracy accusation against the other side sound plausible.
the other reason, is the government's reaction to any situation. It is in the nature of all Americans to be paranoid of our government. it is our duty, as patriots. so when big government responds to a situation in a way that appears to be an attack on rights, there is no reason why conspiracy theories shouldn't fly!
even if they aren't correct, they serve their purpose of waking Americans up to the real threat to freedom, and that threat isn't death, but the fear of dying, which our government lately has been utilizing as a tool for several years now.
I don't think you needed to ask a question to realize this.

You know what makes them believable?
It's the retards that believe in them and then spread it around like crap on a cake.
Oh course, CBS MSNBC and others love Michael Moore and his crap cake...
bias taste so good to them....
"...if it blames Bush, it has to be true..." - Radical Left slogan
It basically is the truth as they see it vs. the facts as they are...
you see "if" Bush didn't attack the trade towers, then that would be a good reason for him to go fight the terrorist...
The anti-Bush retard croud wants to make Bush look like an idiot.... so they twist the truth, and volia everyone believes them...
It is really sad... these people are so delusional they should be admitted to a mental hospital...
Bottom line: 9/11 was the result of Radical ISlamic Terrorism... they killed thousands of Americans...
They sould not be praised as "freedom fighters"
They should not be praised for defying Bush
yet that is what the radical Left does... they have this in coimmon with the terrorist, they both hate Bush and spread conspiracies for more people to hate Bush...
Not just Bush, they hate America in general...

It is also quite easy to ignore the truth in favor of putting on the blinders and allowing Government to get away with anything as long at it doesn't effect you personally in a negative way. Politics is Power, pure and simple, Governments can and will do anything as a means to an end, even if it results in "collateral damage of the population." Check your history, this has been going on since man could walk upright. It's very easy to be dismissive, and even easier to put others down to make yourself, or your social group look superior.

It takes a person that believes in blind justice and blind faith to believe the Government is honest. You have got to be kidding.
There may be a person here and there in Government that believes in honesty and the best for the American people but most get caught up in the power trip (most already have wealth) and begin thinking they can make decisions based on ego issues and do something to prove your power. And the saddest thing is that most do not have the intelligence to make any sort of informed decision even if they were honest and wanted to.
Come on! Open your eyes. This Government is out for itself.

Because it is impossible for them to think that a whack job could do those things. The feel that there has to be a greater cause of catastrophy than a few whockos causing havoc. Just like JFK 43 years later we are still hearing about how the cia, the mafia, the republicans did it. Why is it so hard to believe a whack job did this? Their think they have a greater importance and that they know something that everyone else is too stupid to see. WHACK JOBS!

Research, evidence and spin. The U.S. Government is 100% responsible for 9/11/01 due to its failure to enforce the laws of the land and its failure to do its job. The government has one supreme job...to secure our borders and protect its citizens from all enemies, foreign and domestic. Instead, the government allowed 9/11/01 to happen and then punished law-abiding citizens by taking away our rights and freedoms while illegal aliens were/are working in our ports, at our airports, in our hotels, on our military bases, in security positions, on our roads and infrastructures and even our technology sectors. Our identities are being stolen, data is compromised on government computers and still our government drags its feet. We need to investigate the traitors in our government!
