First, just get a job with a company that you know you want to work for - even if it is Customer Service. Afterward, you can meet the IT guys, get to know them and show them that you know your stuff, and when an opening comes up they'll give you and inside track on the position. I hate to say it, but networking with people is just as important as networking those computers.

I have recruited IT for many years and you are right, experience is just as if not more important in that field than the degree. You might have to take an entry level opening, do some consulting work (an put it on your resume!). Mainly I would advise you to be open to any job at 1st once you gain more experience you can be more specific and choosy. Another important thing is to be sure any job you do take has a manager who is willing to teach you and expose you to new things.

Do some projects on your own to keep your skills current and produce some demonstrations of your ability.

You also can volunteer for a non-profit.

The good news is that once you get that first job, it will be much easier to get another job.

You didn't say if you have posted your resume online or not. If so you could log on to web sites that have hidden job markets, or jobs alerts that can tell you what market is out there for you.
