When I played I would try to play the game in my mind before it started. I would try to go through different scenarios and react to them, so when it happened in the game I wouldn't be surprised.
Example: I played defense I would picture a pass coming to me on the point and I would picture myself taking a one-timer on the net. It really helped me stay relaxed.

My defense partner used to put his hockey glove up to his nose and take a deep breath.

I go for a quick, hard skate in warm-up. I find that it makes the first couple shifts easier. (The first one is a killer if you don't properly warm up).

Stay physically intense, and mentally relaxed. Practice playing with confidence.

Confidence is everything.

Think about playing well, not about your statistics. I always found when I thought I "needed" a goal, I'd grip the stick a little too tight.

Most importantly...have fun. Its what its all about.

I love hockey. Your question makes me wish I was 10 years younger, lol.

If you are a goalie, just stick to your routine and shut everyone and everything out.

If you are a player, usually joking around and staying loose before a game works best.

Worse thing to do before a game, have sex. In fact, don't have sex for a few days before a game.. keeps the testosterone up... more aggression.

Personally I either sit in the locker room or on the players bench. I dont talk to anyone until the game starts. I just sit there alone and concentrate. Give it a try it might suprise you how the silence gets you ready to go.

At the end of the day, it always comes back to fundamentals. Stance, positioning (top of the blue paint), hand position, stick position, squaring to the shooter, rebound control. Concentrate on making the first save of the game. After that, worry about the next save. Stay in the present.

One of my team mates always listens to his ipod before each game, i havent done it myself but I actually am starting to think i might do it, it just might be a good way to get motiviated and feel more energized before you skate, and as always warm up good!
