we can chat online with any one & get replies within a second no matter the distance ;does this take place thru satellites or thru cables?what hav servers got to do with this?

The amount of data is so little (only text) that it takes only seconds.

To understand better how the data is delivered:
YOU -> YAHOO SERVER -> FRIEND

First you send the text to a server which delivers it to your friend (in seconds of course).

it passes throught the yahoo servers, to trace the yahoo ids and then to the other person. the servers store all the data and they are the ones that send the data throught satelite or cables in that country.
nowadays, there is a fibre optic cable to link the whole world which will increase internet speeds.
