Those are great answers but im gonna have to go with Bela Fleck and the Flecktones. Im afaid to say it but each of those guys have more talent in their pinky finger than everyone thats already listed combined. You should check out there dvd if you havent already seen them live. http://www.amazon.com/Bela-Fleck-Flecktones-Live-Quick/dp/B00005YUNL/sr=8-1/qid=1166199903/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/105-5011671-8122066?ie=UTF8&s=dvd

wow best jam band ever? thats a tough one. i honestly have to say that broken social scene, for the amount of material they have, (only two records), they are the most talented group of musicians i have seen perform live. and thats my standard, the live jam. but i mean anyone playing with bb king, or like the band, those are definitely holding up to the test of time.

The Allman Brothers Band - seen them stay 13 situations...arms down ultimate stay band grateful ineffective - the unique "jam band" did no longer opt for a radio hit to become international nicely-conventional widespread Panic - super musicianship, you will discover them 2 nights in a row, and see a distinctive stay overall performance each evening Phish - contemporary-day equivelent to the grateful ineffective Wilco - each so often takes themselves too heavily, yet experimental jam rock at its ultimate.

Definitely Grateful Dead! Of course Jerry is missed, but they are amazing even today. I have several of their concerts on DVD from the late 70's and early 80's and they are great to watch again and again!

The Dead, they would go on legendarily long and inspired jam sessions.

Little Feat; inspired by all types of music, they play really well. Plus, I don't recall any of them dying of a heroin overdose a la Gerry (Jerry)Garcia from the Dead. I wonder just how "Grateful" he is while he's burning in hell now.
