Back in the late 60's, record companies signed bands that created a folllowing, played live where the artists can hone their performance skills, etc. Nowadays I called these so-called entertainers, made for video singers, because they can't perform beyond the first 5 rows. Back in the days, they were into artist development. For example A & M records signed talented musicians. Lots of singers/songwriters were signed. Nowadays, it's all assembly line music. This is why the old bands are making the most money on the touring circuit, and all the audience aren't old fogies either, there's a whole lotta young people in those concerts too, which tells you that young people are hungry for good music, ARE YOU PAYING ATTENTION RECORD COMPANIES?????

In any era there was crappy music and good music. For example
in the 70s there was Disco that mainly sucked and in the 80 there was "new wave" (the invented synthesizers and any loser with some money started to dress up funny and sing 3 notes on a keyboard with 2 of his friends and sing a shitty song)Something good actually came out of this...Depeche mode ,but I think that's it.And now i think that even if hip hop is a trend there are other genres (with better lyrics ,songs and sounds) on the market ,and many good underground acts.

well for me, i love all genres of music- be it rock, pop, r'n'b, hip hop, soul, dance, classical, reggae whatever. its just that the majority of the songs today are of a poor standard. the quality of the 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s and and some of the 90s stuff is certainly lacking in the 00s, which is today's decade. but yes, music nowadays is crap most of the time- it goes to show the music industry doesn't care about quality but as in quantity and the amount of records the artist sells and the amount of cash they make. money sadly is the main motivation for the majority of record companies and people like simon cowell, rather than anything else. the music scene has most definitely gone to pot. however, i prefer the retro stuff myself any day of the week.

I guess it depends on what you thought good 70s and 80s music was . If you liked stuff like The Ramones New York Dolls and Blondi from the late 70s and stuff like The Dead Kennedys and GBH from the 80s then yes todays stuff cant compare

I agree with you 100%. I think most (not all) new music today is untalented crap, made by "artists" who have no natural abilities on their own, but some producer somewhere thinks that if this person can be taught to sing and shake their booty on TV, then it will make them alot of $$$.

Many radio stations are owned by the same large broadcasting companies, who are in bed with the record companies, who give them crappy music and say, "Here, you WILL play this on your station". The modern DJ has absolutely no personal choice over what is played on the radio, unlike the old days where the DJ was actually picking what he thought was good music that people wanted or ought to hear, or would actually like.

Anyone who doesn't believe that they are being force-fed lousy music by big business is kidding themselves.

Every era has it's good bad great and indifferent- and it depends on what you mean by "todays music". Some of the "board rock" around today is truly brilliiant, whereas some of the current "pop" is truly banal. Having said that so were many pop bands of the 70's and 80's at the time. However you'll be amazed what current poop you find yourself yearning to hear (and buying compliations of) 10-15 years from now.

There are some politial hip-hop songs(i.e. "Mosh" by Eminem) that are good, but other than that people are better off listening to stuff from the 60's, 70's, 80's, and 90's. Some rock songs today are good, but most stuff is crap.

Yes, today's music is crap. At first I thought that all pop music, no matter what year it is, is terrible, but today's music is by far the worst. However, you can still find good music in the alternative and underground scenes. You just have to look for it. Check out: Built to Spill, Black Keys, Eels.

I honestly think that if you include early to mid 70s music in that (plus a bit of music from the 1960s) you'd get a better range of musical talent.

For me though, the early 70s to Mid 80s was when Rock ruled the planet.

When you think it's getting bad you must be getting old. I can't stand a lot of this new stuff. It's a bit over done prefabricated. When I see what seems to be a 12 yr old boy singing a song called "Getting enough." I start to get very afraid(lil chris) I'm a big fan of Goo goo dolls formed in 1986 If you like a soft rock it's great. Jumpin jaks they play a lot of 70 & 80s stuff
