For whom the bell tolls. I think it has something to do with church bells being rung at various events in a persons life. If the bell tolls during a wedding it's a bad sign. I think at some funerals the bell tolls for the deceased. It tends to be a bad omen.

Correct Phrase is "For Whom the Bell Tolls"....means your number is up...it's your turn....usually not in a good way.

My understanding is that when a person dies the church bells ring... or toll... after the church service.
