Your skin cells absorb water.

This is caused by the osmotic effect.
Your cells contain water with a higher percentage of salts.
Nature likes things to be balanced so it tries to make the concentrations on the in- and outside of your skincells to be equal.

Water can penetrate through the skincells but the salt inside the cells can't get out.
So to lower the saltconcentration water has to be sucked in the cells.

This effect is pretty harmless when it happens to your skins cells. If it would happen to your braincells it could be fatal.

This is why drinking a large quantity of water at once can kill you.

Because your hands absorb the water that is in your bath with time and then your hands become prune or soggy.
