Its called nailpop, those round things are normal in older ceilings,it may be nails or screws...your best bet would be to buy spackle at a home depot,id buy a 5 gallon pail and get a good knife and hawk...ask someone what they are.You can do this yourself with a good ladder,go over every one with some spacke, make sure you hammer each slightly with a hammer....if they are screws then remove the spackle with a knife and screw the screw in slightly with a screwdriver.Ok,if your now really lost, then call a spackle and taping guy in your local paper and get an estimate....it can run anywhere from 200 to 1000 bucks depending on how much area they need to do.

Gottago w/ paulbean.
Those nail pops could also indicate presence of moisture , over driven nails.Sheetrock gets crushed & can' bear its own weight .
Sometimes ,just not enough nails.
If you pick away spackle & you can see any movement when you push up on rock, thats it.
Drive the old nail a little deeper & put in a new screw an inch or so away.
A few extras wont hurt.

Yes, they are nails that are imbedded. You can spackle over them and paint but they may return.

Yes they are. You can fix by applying spackle, sand, prime then paint.

Like she says use a spackling compound ...then sand smooth, then repaint.
