1989 Ford Taurus. Also the inside light remains on & won't go off. And now the 'check engine' light has come on as well. What's going on?

Sorry it's a 1999 Ford Taurus (not 1989)

There could be a problem in an electronics module but the most common cause is the sensor switch inside the door that tells the system when the door is closed. It is a real pain to change - not one of Ford's "better ideas!" The check engine light may be a coincidence but will take and analyzer to determine the cause. Most Auto Zones will hook up an analyzer for free and give you a printout but you will need someone with some knowledge and experience to decipher the results. Just because, for instance, it says an oxygen sensor code doesn't mean that the oxygen sensor is bad, just that it is where the problem is showing up.

Probably a bad Door Ajar switch.
Check engine light comes from a code stored in you cars computer. It could be from any one of your engine/transmission related sensors.

i had the same interior light and door ajar light in my 98 ranger. i removed one of the pads (the ones that keep the door from slamming into the frame) from the inside of the door, and voila, problem solved.
