I think thats pretty obvious, its just the same as everyday life!if there were no laws or rules, people would do what they want, whether that's beating up another player, or cheating. I mean people still cheat and lash out in sport, at least there are fewer incidences of this when there are laws.

>so that everyone plays by a recognised set of rules.

>so that you dont have absolute anarchy

>so that you dont have the rich and powerfull distorting the game... and it sis supposed to be a game. However in football it doesnt work that way.. the rich and pwoerfull break whatever rules they think dont apply to them. be it diving, fouling, approaching players under contract elsewhere, ignoring rules over the number of seats you must give to away supporters, ove how much you charge away supporters.

A set of rules is important, but only so far. Theoretically you shouldnt need someone to enforce the rules.. a player should know the rules themselves and recognise when they have broken the rules and take an appropriate penalty. The referee in football is meant to ajudicate if there is some discrepancy or as an independant third party.

This approach used to work untill relatively recently in Cricket & Rugby Union, it still works in sports such as Golf, Sailing etc... It sort of works in Snooker. It doesn't work in Soccer where the rich and the powerfull manipulate and break what ever rule they feel like, semingly with impunity

Umm...The same reason we need laws in society...to prevent total anarchy...No athlete is above the law...see Albert Haynesworth, Ron Artest, University of Miami football team vs. Florida International...

if you ask me theirs not enough laws in football.if they follow rugby league example like union as been copying.you wouldn't get a 6'6" 18stone prop talking back to a 5'6"referee the way footballers do 1 bit of back you are penalised and your team looses 10yds,continue you get sin binned, leaving your team 1 player short for 10 Min's.this is why they respect refs.footballers verbally abuse refs.if you spoke to a cop like that you would be celled for the night, then booked.

Why do we need laws in society? So that people won't get beaten up on the street. Why do we need laws in sport? So that people won't get beaten up on the street.

We dont need laws, but some others do and they might not play the game properly without them.
