A lot depends on the color of the fabric. If its a dark fabric then go ahead and use a good upholstery cleaner. If it's white, the you should use an 50/50 mixture of peroxide and water, it may take a few treatments, but works well. There is one more way if it really dirty, and I know it sounds crazy, but trust me it works well (as long as it not leather, suede, or Herculean). Car wash, not an auto one, the kind with the high pressure spray nozzles. Go to your local dollar store and buy some "Awesome", spray the couch with the awesome, concentrating on the stains, then load it up in the truck and take it to the car-wash. When you get it home it is best to leave it in the garage for about 2 to 3 days. Then hit it with some disinfectant spray to prevent mold from the moisture, and make it smell good.

You can buy commercial spray-on upholstery cleaners from a supermarket. Or you can use a good carpet stain remover, spray on. Then rinse and dry. Test a small area to make sure its OK on your fabric

Go to a janitorial store and rent a upholstery cleaner. Those ones work better then the ones you rent from a regular grocery store, and they are about the same price.

Rent a carpet cleaner and use the furniture attachments. We had to do something similar for my sister a few months ago.

Good luck, and happy holidays!
