Excellent idea - it's really peaceful and gorgeous. There's nothing to do except watch the world go by and eat tons of fabulous food that's being prepared for you every time you turn around.

The houseboats usually come with two or three guys though - one to cook, one to steer up front and another one to handle whatever needs to be handled in the back - so in that sense there is a limit on privacy.

You don't need to plan a route, as all the houseboats pretty much do the same loop and you'll undoubtedly pass tons of them as you, too, drift along.

Check out the Taj Malabar in Kochi for a place to stay - it's a lovely 5 star hotel, and they will also arrange a houseboat for you. Just be sure to mention you want a private one, as there are some with multiple passengers.

I'm not sure if they arrange houseboat tours, but you can also check out the Cherai Beach Resort. It's not a 5 star, but they have great little cabins set right on the water, and an amazing Ayurvedic clinic. Although anywhere you go in Kerala will access to Ayurvedic treatments- make sure you indulge.

Enjoy!
