A plate of cookies and a $10 gift card would be a great gift (Including a nice, handwritten note thanking him/her for excellent service).

Oh yes, Christmas is a great time to show appreciation for services received year around, especially if the work was usually done to your satisfaction, and I would say that in addition to the usual pay, I`d give a Turkey, Ham, Gift Basket, or purchase $25.00 gift certificate OR a Shell Gas card, which can be purchased in most Drug stores, tuck inside of a Christmas Card expressing your appreciation for their services. I think the Gas card should be at least $25,00 and all others as well. Now the dine out certificate will probably come in more handy after the Holidays. and will make a nice gift, but theres so much food everywhere during the Holidays, it probably won`t be used right away. but I guess that depends on the person .

my grand parents worked in a post office and most of the time it was cookies or some kind of baked goods. My grandfather used to get little knicknacks from people who traveled a lot or foreign money and my grandmother sometimes got jewelry. My mom usually puts cookies in the mailbox for our mail person.

My sister and brother-in-law are mail carriers, and they like cash best! I think most people give them about twenty or thirty bucks in a Christmas card. Alcohol would probably be a no-no, since you don't know who drinks and who doesn't.

Cash always works best -
I can't 'gift' the mail person anymore - he/she changes, all the time.
