Not all were afraid of Hitler & were sacked for speaking their minds (eg. Heinz Guderian). However, they did not go against him out of "professionalism" as they had made personal oaths to Hitler that they will serve & not betray him & they do not wish to break that oath.

Hitler was a popular head of state. So an officer could not expect much support. If an officer was fired for disobedience he could be denied the right to wear the uniform and lose his pension. If caught engaging in treason under the Fuehrer order called "Sippenhaft" his wife and children could sent to a concentration camp for a Generals treason.

they believed in his ideas and thought what he was doing was right. They did defy him by trying to kill him a few times but they were rooted out and executed. they eventually did defy him and tried to make a truce with the allies but it was to late, the enemy was at the gates of berlin
