It is a child's book, with magic in it and cats that can talk, in particular a black one called capenal, carbenal something like that. I read it as a child but cannot for the life of me remember the name Id like to get it again.

There are 3 Carbonel books by Barbara Sleigh, Carbonel, Kingdom of Carbonel and Carbonel and Calidor; I don't know if they are in print at present but are often to be seen on ebay. The first I have listed is the easiest to find, and the 3rd is the most difficult.
