I have considered buying a plan of some kind, but it just seems like money down the drain. I never, ever go to the doctor. I believe in letting the body heal itself if possible. And if there's some major catastrophe that happens to me, I can get government assistance like pay on a sliding scale or something, right? Is this a major risk?

Let me just say that on Sept of this year I was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. I'm 35 Husband and Father of 2. Having Health Insurance to me even before I became ill was always important. Just remember that If you get something serious before you get Insurance they probably wont cover you.

I have health insurance, and I've used it probably once in 10 years. Still, here's the thing- as you pay each month, chances are you will eventually need it- and when you do, it will cost much more than you've put into it. A normal operation could cost $150,000, and they will not leave you alone for paying it back.

When I was younger, I felt the same way. I didn't have it for soo long. As you get a little older, you realise the unpredictable risk (of what it COULD be- who knows???!) is worse than the predictable monthly payment, even if it is an annoying amount.

It's better to have it, at least catastrophic coverage. It's the smart thing to do. Oh, and it's fair- you would be so surprised to see what an operation costs!

Chika might be the dumbest person on this site- if you DIED, why would you need health insurance?

i havent had health insurance for almost a year now and before that i only had it for a year and a half and before that i didnt have it for 2 years...i have asthma and allergies and still get by just fine...i dont go to the doctor when im sick either and since im a girl and have to go to the gyno every year i just go to planned parenthood and get my birth control there and pay on a sliding scale. even though i dont have insurance, because ive been on the same allergy medicine for so long, my doctor approves it so i can get a Rx, this does cost a little bit tho, $70 a month, but thats way cheaper than buying cobra insurance which is about $400 a month...and yes if you have a medical emergency and go to the emergency room they have a form you can fill out for govt assistance to pay on a sliding scale, i have a freind who had to do that b.c she had a kidney stone, its a pain to fill out all the forms but its definitly worth it

if you're young and relatively healthy, you can probably afford to go without a comprehensive policy for a while. however, thinking government assistance or sliding pay scale will bail you out of a catastrophe is foolish. the level of care and post care may well depend on your resources. you can find quite affordable catastrophe policies and then you'll have the best of both worlds.

Huge risk. You're gambling with major future debt. If the body could heal itself all the time we wouldn't need doctors. What if you had a car wreck, fell and broke bones, got appendicitis. None of this will heal themselves. I've known people who fell ill and lost everything. Hospitals will take you to court and the government is not going to bail you out. It's like car insurance. Seems unnecessary but when you need it you're glad you have it. I never get sick but had my appendix out. I had insurance but it would have cost me $20,000 out of pocket if I hadn't.

I didn't have insurance for a while until I started college..then they required it. It is very very expensive. Its more necessary for younger children and early adults but if you don't have any serious problems I say you could go without it if its that much of an expense to you. I do however think that everyone should have it just in case...you know.

how old are you ?
if you young and take good care of your body and mind you should be able to get away without health care for a while.
but if you are middle age or older you must have a plan. one never knows what happens.
also older people need different tests more often.
good luck !!
