Pinochet risked his own life in a coup to save chile from the much worse communist regime of the time.
His country then went from strength to strength as a a model of capitalism.
There were questionable events during his dictatorship. Some of them effected to protect his government from revolutionaries ready to take the country back to the stone age.No one can really understand what desperate measures for desperate situations is until they have lived under a hard line communist dictatorship. If so, then you would be happy to fight fire with fire.
Pinochet also ended his dictatorship many years ago and allowed democracy to form.He was voted out and walked away. That doesnt happen anywhere else in the world. No election rigging like in africa, no uprising becasue he didnt win.

Pinochet was vital in british success in the falklands,Sharing sensitive intelligence and lending the use of chilean airbases to the british.
I think if anyone is angry that pincochet defied justice for protecting his nation froma worse enemy , then maybe they should look at the real deal dictators ,like kim jong il of north korea.Hes still alive and his ppl are suffering the worst kind of oppression.Something chileans did not suffer under pinochet.

Maybe ppl shouldnt read the daily mirror before making up their minds.

Augusto Pinochet remained under the full protection of the British Government from the moment his own people sought to bring him to trial on charges of mass murder etc. The Spanish courts attempted to bring him to court, but he was put under immediate house arrest here in UK by the then Home Secretary, Jack Straw and was visited by Lady Thatcher and others of his UK based friends.

The reason for all of this protection was because Pinochet allowed the SAS to use one of his bases during the Falkland's War in c1982.

These are the facts and are not meant in prosecution or defence of Pinochet.

The matter has been resolved by death.

Speak no ill of the dead.

I entirely endorse what PRIVATE has said.

Let the matter rest.

Pinochet was a barbarian. He left Chile leaving behind many dead bodies and unanswered questions. On Earth he escaped with 16 years of being a hated ex-president. He now has an eternity to meditate on why he isn't in a better resting place.

Life isn't fair but do we really understand the politics of Chile? Yes he was a wicked bastard by all accounts but if he did what he truly believed was the best for his country who are we to judge...look at what our government has inflicted upon the people of Iraq...far worse than what Saddam was doing...perhaps not in the long term but who knows?

Why is it that libs bend over backwards to defned and apologize for tyrants like Mao, Ho Chi Min, Stalin, Lenin, Castro, but not Pinochet?

THe reason is that at least pinochet created a capitalist society, and stepped down when his popularity waned. He was a tyrant, a murderor, and a hero to Chile.

Ponochet?

He did deserve a harsh sentence, but so do lots of other scumbags. Ideally, the sentence should follow soon after the crime, not decades later when the person has stopped being bad anyway.

He was a sick old man. Putting a sick old man in jail really isn't a humane thing to do. John Kennedy used to reply to questions like this with "Life just isn't fair."

In 896 AD the body of Pope Formosus was exhumed by his successor and tried for treason. Is this what you'd prefer?

(Yes, he was "convicted!")
